How to Book Your Learner's Licence & Find Your Closest DLTC

You can write your learner's licence at any official Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) registered with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and provincial departments of transport across all 9 provinces. Most major metropolitan centres in Gauteng, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal now operate Computerized Learner's Licence Test (CLLT) touchscreens, while smaller regional municipalities administer standard computerized or paper tests.

Click the “Find Closest DLTC (GPS)” button at the top of this page. It calculates the distance in kilometres from your current location to all 79 official DLTC stations across all 9 South African provinces and sorts the nearest stations to the top with direct Google Maps directions.

In Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, booking must be scheduled online via the official national eNaTIS portal at online.natis.gov.za. Select 'Book a Test Slot for Learner's Licence', enter your South African ID number, pick your preferred DLTC centre, and reserve a date. You must visit the centre within 3 business days to pay the booking fee and confirm your slot. In the Western Cape, bookings are scheduled via the City of Cape Town e-Services portal or directly in-person at municipal traffic departments.

You can download a printable blank Form LL1 (Application for Learner's Licence) PDF for free directly at Form-LL1-Application-for-Learners-Licence.pdf. Print it in black ink and fill in your personal details and Vehicle Code (Code 1 Motorcycle, Code 2 Light Motor Vehicle, or Code 3 Heavy Motor Vehicle) before arriving at the DLTC to save time in the queue.

You must bring: 1. Your original green barcoded South African ID book or Smart ID Card (plus 2 certified photocopies). 2. Two to four recent passport-size ID photographs (black & white or colour). 3. Proof of residential address not older than 3 months (utility bill, retail statement; or sworn police affidavit if residing with family/landlord). 4. Completed Application for Learner's Licence Form (LL1). 5. Booking fee payment confirmation or debit/credit card. 6. Registered optometrist eye test certificate (Form LL1 section completed) if you wish to bypass the DLTC eye test queue.

Statutory fees vary slightly by province: In Gauteng, the application booking fee is approximately R108.00, plus an issuing fee of approximately R60.00 upon passing. In the Western Cape, the booking fee is approximately R68.00 plus R45.00 issuing fee. In KwaZulu-Natal, fees range around R114.00. Most major testing centres now enforce card-only payments (debit/credit card) for security, so avoid bringing only cash.

Yes! This is the single biggest time-saver at South African DLTCs. You can have an optometrist complete the official eye examination section on Form LL1 within 3 months prior to your application. When you hand in your certified optometrist certificate at the testing station, examiners will exempt you from the on-site eye testing queue, saving you up to 2 hours of waiting time.

You must pass all 3 sections independently on a single sitting: 1. Rules of the Road: minimum 22 out of 28 (78.6%). 2. Road Signs and Signals: minimum 23 out of 28 (82.1%). 3. Vehicle Controls: minimum 6 out of 8 (75.0%). If you score 28/28 on rules and 28/28 on signs, but only 5/8 on vehicle controls, you immediately fail the entire exam and must re-book.

Official RTMC statistics show that between 58% and 64% of first-time learner candidates fail. The top 3 failure causes are: 1. Computerized kiosk time panic: Candidates who only read paper books get disoriented by the 45-minute countdown clock. 2. Statutory trap wording: Wording around right-of-way at mini-circles, emergency shoulder driving (Reg 298A), and stopping distances from fire hydrants (1.5m) and bridges (9m). 3. Controls sudden-death: Missing 3 simple control switches fails the whole exam. Practicing 100% free with K53 Co-Pilot ensures you master all statutory traps beforehand.
